Jack and Jill went up the hill…

…but today, I didn’t. 

And from the looks of it, I won’t be climbing any hills for awhile.

Unfortunately, I have had to make the decision to stop doing incline on the treadmill until further notice. It wasn’t the choice I wanted to make, but necessity has made it so.

You see, I don’t want large calf muscles. 

Ever since I can remember, I have had pretty solid calves. Though shapely, my calves have always had a tendency to develop muscle really quickly. In the past, having well developed calf muscles didn’t particularly bother me, as it gave me a very strong, athletic appearance.

However, my interests have changed greatly since then.

These days, I dream of a toned, but mostly long, lean physique. Though I have never picked exercises with the goal of getting bigger calves, it was recently brought to my attention that I have been making a tremendous mistake: incline. 

As I’ve mentioned before, I truly enjoy doing incline on the treadmill. Not only do I love the added challenge of emulating an uphill hike, but I’ve appreciated being able to burn two to three times more calories than walking on flat ground. 

People like me (folks who don’t always look forward to working out) are constantly searching for a way to burn as many calories as possible, as easily as they can. So even though I knew walking incline on a regular basis wasn’t helping me to achieve the slender, bulk-free legs I desired, I kept right on with it.

Habit aside, I simply can’t go on! Sorry, Suzanne. 🙅🏽‍♀️

Today’s Workout: 1 hour. Cardio (Treadmill). 2 miles. 2% incline. 272 calories burned.

Meh. This calorie count genuinely offends me. 😫 It almost seems pointless to walk for an entire hour only to burn less than 300 calories. I mean, come on now!

Granted, I’ve needed to baby my ankle a bit more recently, so I haven’t been cranking up the speed. Even still, it was hard not to mumble under my breath as I compared the calorie burn at 2% incline to what I would normally burn at 10%. It’s highway robbery, I tell you! 

Oh well. It is what it is. A 2% incline is better than no incline at all! Plus, it’s much, much easier on my ankle, which means that I’m not grimacing in pain the entire hour. 

Another thing to consider is the accuracy potential inaccuracy of the treadmill’s calorie counter. I mean, how does a hunk of metal and plastic really know how many calories I’ve burned? 

Upon poking around the Internet a bit (since it’s clearly the authority on pretty much all matters of importance in life), I confirmed that calorie burn depends on an individual’s weight.

All things constant, someone who weighs 180 pounds should burn more calories doing the same exact exercise as someone who weighs 120 pounds. Taking this into consideration, my treadmill is more than likely underestimating the amount of calories I’ve burned by quite a bit. I mean, what baseline is it using to calculate the amount of calories the average user should be burning? 🤔

Dissatisfied by today’s results, I tried finding a calorie burn calculator online. According to it, I should have burned closer to 400 calories, which is a much more agreeable result. All the same, I’m not entirely confident in the calculator either. I’m sure there is a proper way to calculate this involving numbers and formulas and junk, but… math. 🤮

LOL… I’m good.

How am I supposed to estimate the calories I’ve burned more reliably? What do some of you do/use to estimate your calorie burn? Feel free to share your own tips and tricks for this!

Anyhow, I really enjoyed my walk today. The hour went by surprisingly fast; by the time I got on, it felt as though it was time to step right back off of the treadmill.

I don’t know why time flew by so fast today; maybe I was just having a lot of fun and didn’t realize it. I watched a few episodes of The Undateables while I walked, and boy, was I entertained—I love British shows! 

Even though I didn’t burn as many calories as I would have liked, at least I know what to watch when I want to go for two hours. That being said, I’d say today’s workout was still a success! 🙂
